I was having trouble kickstarting my project into full gear as I wasn't really sure how to go about it. To top things off, my project is research based (non-implementation) and most of the other books only discuss implementation/programming projects. This book should be read by all students in the summer before their third year or by those who are struggling with their project right now. It tells you how to structure your report, tells you about questionnaire design, poster presentations (which my university had as part of the assessment) and about presenting infront of a board of examiners.
It covers research methods, approaches, (SSADM etc are covered in plain English) it even tells you how to format a report and roughly how many pages each section should be!
The best thing about this book? ITS WRITTEN IN PLAIN ENGLISH! This is such a refreshing change to all those lecturers who try to be clever and write a book that no-one can be bothered to try to understand. We don't want to read something "clever"! We want to read something that we understand!
Philip Weaver is a senior lecturer at Wolverhampton University in Information Systems and was at Westminster University prior to that. He is an experienced project supervisor and has been a Systems Development officer for B&Q among other things!
This book is the key to getting your project organised and off the ground on time. It gives you excellent advice on a huge range of areas to do with your final year project. Anything you're stuck on, it'll be in here.
I've only just found my feet and I have 8 weeks left to submit my work but I am positive that I can do an excellent piece of work using this book for reference (yes, reference - you don't have to sit and read the entire book to know what to do - just use the index!). However, if you have time over the summer, do just have a general flick through, it will work wonders.
I would DEFINITELY recommend this to all IS/CS students "READ THIS IN THE SUMMER BEFORE YOUR FINAL YEAR! YOU WON'T REGRET IT" and if you're like me and struggling with what to do, just buy it! It will still be extremely helpful to you!!!
6 out of 5!! Probably the most useful book I ever bought!
