I teach Bosnian at FSI (Foreign Service Institute)and I have extensive experience in teaching this language. From what I have seen, currently available, this is the best guide to learning the predominant language of the former Yugoslavia with concise examples of both the eastern and western variant of the language, a good grammar reference, index and lessons tailored to speakers of the English language. I highly recommend it to anyone studying or teaching this language. Excelently done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, balanced, comprehensive, 9 Jan 2000

It's very difficult to find materials for learning this language, period. The ones that are out there are generally for tourists who want to know how to order at a restaurant. This book offers useage of the lanugage in a variety of situations and in both major lanuage divisions (I prefer to use East and West as opposed to Serbian and Croatian). It also includes reading material to practice with and an extensive glossary of words used in the text.
Not as enjoyable as the texts written for some languages, with games and humourous explanations, it is however, the best tool I have yet found for learning this language.

This review is from: Introduction to the Croatian and Serbian Language (Paperback)
This book does (intentionally) take a long time to get through, crammed as it is with invaluable information. I can see where A. Allen is coming from, it probably isn't the ideal book for the tourist who wants to learn quickly how to say hello and order a coffee. If that's what you're after, try the colloquial or teach yourself series. If you want a thorough grounding in the grammar and vocabulary, to the point that you can construct meaningful sentences of your own; set aside a few months, prepare yourself for some hard work and buy this book - it's the best there is!

This review is from: Introduction to the Croatian and Serbian Language (Paperback)
I strongly suspect previous reviewers have only made very little (if any) use of this book which, in my humble opinion, presents two major flaws.

To start with All the grammar has been dumped into one big unstructured section, which makes it difficult to refer to particular points quickly and easily. In terms of the teaching method the student is invited to regularly break away from the main text in order to study some grammatical point before coming back. This can be very frustrating too, the more so as it's not always easy to find the particular grammar topics in the grammar section.

Most importantly, the solutions to the exercises are absent from the book (if not, somebody tell me where they are!!!) and this is highly frustrating: if you can't practice your knowledge and check your progress you can't build stable foundations for further progress and... you soon give up!

Finally the constant cross-references and comparisons between the Croatian and Serbian languages add an unwanted layer of complexity and an unnecessary academic dimension... but that's a very personal opinion I admit.

It's a shame because a lot of effort has obviously been put into this book and it contains an incredible wealth of information including a mini-dictionary that's perfectly appropriate for beginners.

A little more effort in the structure and organisation of this book, and the solutions to the exercises would make it a truly outstanding learning tool... however in its state it's useless to novices and beginners who don't have the benefit of a knowledge network or supporting academic environment.

I would have given 2 stars but I feel my review ought to counter-balance the exaggerated and ill-conceived previous ratings, hence just one star.
