This review is from: Caughley and Worcester Porcelains, 1775-1800 (Hardcover)
This was the first complete work to challenge the century old problem of Caughley/Worcester attribution. Using fragments and wasters excavated from both sites removed the doubts and mistakes that had been propagated since the time of Jewitt in spite of Binns attempt to rectify them one hundred years earlier.
My attitude has always been 'dont tell me- show me' and this book suits me in that respect. Over three hundred ilustrations are the pefect way to show similarities and differences between the disputed pair of sources and the text clears up any remaing doubts.
A chapter just on popular myths, and a list of corrections to be made to what we consider to be standard works (Watney:- blue and white etc., Caughley and Coalport:Barrett, and more) show the depth of
research G.G. is willing to undertake.
The ultimate conclusions drawn are that there is less Caughley porcelain around, the quality was comparable in many cases to Worcester and should not be considered as some poor relation, and that quite often the differences are evident if not obvious.
The objective of the Faber Monograph series was to publish the definitive work on the subject and this book succeeds admirably . A book vital to a collector of either factory
