I used this for both my BMus and MPhil in Ethnomusicology and it proved to be an invaluable resouce. It is written very plainly, without the convoluted babble of a lot of academic books (especially in this field of study) and gives a good insight into the study and practise of ethnomusicology. There are quite a few entertaining anecdotes from the earlier days of the dicipline, which lighten the workload, if studying ethnomusicology at university. I enjoyed working with this book, it being a well rounded and accessible resource, and although I am selling a lot of my academic books now I have finished studying, I don't think I will sell this one. I do recommend it, written as it is by a highly esteemed and experienced ethnomusicologist, and despite its size it never feels boring or heavy. The titles and chapter layout are great, and make flicking back and through for references and quotes quite easy. There are few books in this esoteric field of study that live up to this one and it is well worth the price tag compared to some of the others.
