5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling account of ones loves and losses., 28 Jun 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: African Nights (Paperback)
I read this after reading 'I Dreamed of Africa'. This book takes a closer look, into the lives of those she has loved and lost, that were mentioned in 'I Dreamed of Africa'. Kuki places her heart on her sleeve, to share her thoughts, hopes and dreams with the world. This is another tuely compelling and remarkable account of one womens misfotune and drive to succeed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring yet tragic, 2 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: African Nights (Paperback)
This is the second of Kuki Gallman's books I read, and though it isn't quite as good as the first (I Dreamed of Africa), it's definitely one of the better accounts of what life is like for a European living in East Africa. If you were under any illusion that life in Kenya is an endless parade of safaris, settler parties and cocktails you are sorely mistaken. The reality is quite different: Kenya, even without considering its politics, is a tough country and not made easier by the fact that Kuki lost both her husband and her son to accidents - her husband in a road accident and her son by a snake bite. Many are the friends who are lost to plane crashes, car accidents, diving accidents and animal attacks - it's clearly not just a charmed existence living, and making a living, in Kenya.

The book is set out in several short essays all telling their own story or their own fascinating event in Kuki Gallman's life - definitely better to start by reading I Dreamed of Africa and then move on to African Nights, but definitely worth a read in any case.

Yet again Kuki depicts wonderfully some short stories from her life in Kenya.
A pleasure to read, in fact I could read her works over and over again.

4.0 out of 5 stars I wish...., 28 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: African Nights (Hardcover)
There have been great tragedies in Kuki Gallman's life, but she had had such adventures! Because I love Africa I read this extremely well written book with envy. However, it doesn't quite live up to 'I Dreamed of Africa' and I was disappointed to find that it was shorter.
