5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't believe 650+ pages about an Irish Boarding school could be so entertaining
One of the reasons I love reading entire long lists (Skippy Dies was long listed for 2010 Booker Prize) is that I stumble upon fantastic books that I wouldn't otherwise pick up. I had heard good things about Skippy Dies before the Booker long list was announced, but I couldn't motivate myself to read 650+ pages about teenagers living in an Irish boarding school. I'm so...

3.0 out of 5 stars It's good, but not that good
I really thought I was going to love this...

The plot is nothing original, focusing primarily on half a dozen or so characters who study or work at a school in Ireland, following their lives both in and outside the school and how they affect one another, so in some ways it's a kind of soap opera. The story is told in three sections: after the prologue where...

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring..., 25 Feb 2013
This review is from: Skippy Dies (Paperback)
I really couldn't get into this book: partly the problem came from the name, since to my generation Skippy is a bush kangaroo, always, and so it is hard to reset your mind to an Irish schoolboy. I did try! However, no matter what, I couldn't feel any empathy for, or interest in, any of the characters, and had no desire to find out what would become of them. I abandoned the book about a quarter of the way in, too bored to continue - a very rare thing for me to do.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dont try Audible download, 19 Nov 2011
By
A. Maloney "reviewer" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I downloaded the audible version of this book - what a mistake. This does not support my Blackberry - even though the website implies it does. I accessed it through an app on my BB which I discovered after trying to load it is only available for USA - this crashed after about an hour of listening & had to be reloaded to access the book again. I contacted audible who would not take any responsibility for the app, saying it was nothing to do with them - despite being directed to it via their website. I was unable to listen to it even on my computer as I could not download the software for windows from the audible website. They eventually agreed to refund the money I spent but this takes a few days. There seems to be something very dodgy about this website, they are mis-selling this product and I would not recommend using it.
