5.0 out of 5 stars Back on Form
Michael Lewis, as a former Salomon Brothers bond trader, has a perspective on the financial markets that other journalists do not. He also writes fluently, and is skilled at taking complex and obscure subjects and explaining them clearly. Of his books, Liar's Poker and The Big Short are terrific, whereas Boomerang seemed to me as if it had been rushed out and rather...

3.0 out of 5 stars good journalism, but somewhat unsatisfying
Michael Lewis is trying to explain the inner workings of the stock markets to a broad audience. If you are a finance professional, the book lacks the kind of detail that would make it really satisfying. There is a much bigger story here than just the IEX founders and a lot of other characters and institutions are glossed over very lightly. The exchanges in particular and...

4.0 out of 5 stars good but.., 20 April 2014

Excellent start and window into amazing world of hft, runs out of puff though and attempts to humanize all characters fails in some cases.

Why does it take this book to raise the fact that all small investors continue to get ripped off? Is there no one able to regulate this industry?

4.0 out of 5 stars Not his best, but perhaps his most important?, 19 April 2014

This review is from: Flash Boys (Kindle Edition)
This book was easy to read and held my interest, but the narrative seemed to jump about a bit - not obvious for example that there is a clear connection between the main group of characters and the Goldman Sachs programmer jailed for stealing code, except via the wider theme.

For my money, Liar's Poker is still his best book, but this one is (if it's true and there's not more to the story) probably his most important. Investors are, according to the book, being systematically robbed by market players.

Michael Lewis has a quite unique ability to make even the dreariest concepts interesting and to explain the inexplicable with ease.

I really enjoyed this book on how high frequency distorts the markets. It reads really well - almost like a thriller novel.

It's hard to believe that the legal of distortion our capital markets is allowed to happen like this. Ultimately, it affects our pension funds.

There is a lot of hype in the media now regarding this subject. Read the book and make up your own mind.

The book has already shaken the industry within a day of its publication. Everybody is even more sceptical of these financial "whizz kids" who are now being regarded as akin to common criminals.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not as good as moneyball or liars poker., 16 April 2014

This was a usual Michael Lewis read . Well written , insightful and gripping. It is a tale of yet another rip off by banks for which the public should be compensated . The investing public is being skimmed or "scalped" to use the US term of billions of dollars. However in my view the book though insightful needs a sequel of a new edition in 6 months time. It spends much time will IEX the good guys but although the book goes to 19December 2013 the success of IEX who has now won over Goodman Sachs is far from assured. Are the dark pools and HFTs going to make a come back. Clear the regulators have lost control and the lunatics are running the asylum. I will watch the space to see how this plays out.
