5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable
This book is packed with hard-to-find information and it's indispensable for any independent filmmaker. It saves you a lot of money, and helps you to budget and pre-negotiate contracts. You'll probably still need a good entertainment lawyer to finalize your contracts but this should help you save at least 80% of lawyers' fees.

2.0 out of 5 stars US LAW ONLY
Though some of the points are universal legal issues, this book focuses on US legal provisions and so is of limited use to producers operating in other jurisdictions such as the UK.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb book, 12 Jan 2010

This book is top-rated on the Amazon US web site and I can see now why. The author takes the approach of highlighting "deal points" - the main negotiating points you should look out for when handling a legal situation. Yes, this book covers US law, nevertheless it is extremely useful even in the UK. For a start, if you're a producer then you should be aware of US law anyway since they will probably become a significant customer. Secondly, many of the points mentioned in the book are generic enough to cover each area in a way that is sufficiently useful even in the UK. The bottom-line is that this book helps the producer appreciate the important legal and deal points whilst at the same time having a lawyer to hand to cover the detailed groundwork and write-up the contract. So read this book as soon as you can. It's VERY clearly laid out and referenced and uses simple enough language to make it an easy read. The book purposely has no legal forms; as the author warns, these should be tailored for each individual deal by your lawyer. Keep in mind that these types of books don't cover every aspect of the law that a lawyer would be aware of and that the law changes rapidly, making any book out of date by the time it is published.
