5.0 out of 5 stars Easily the best book on visual storytelling, 26 Dec 2009

I have read a lot of books on visual storytelling, directing, cinematography and film, but this very easy to understand, simply written book is head and shoulders above all the others. Mr Block understands what goes into making films visually and presents it as an idiots guide in a way that is accessible to all.It is amazing that he was allowed to put so much sensitive info in a book that is so freely available. Save yourself the film school fees and buy this incredible book!

5.0 out of 5 stars The book I didn't know I needed., 25 July 2011

This review is from: The Visual Story: Creating the Visual Structure of Film, TV and Digital Media (Paperback)
Rarely does a book live up to the quotes you read on the back, often telling you things like "This will make you a better film maker" and "A must have fot anybody interested in exploring stories through film" etc, often leaving you slightly disappointed. This is not one of those books. I found it clear concise, and very insightful.

At it's core the book outlines the basic components that can be used to create a visual structure in a film, and how to use those elements to better tell your story. It never strays from this aim, each section is clearly defined, and leads neatly into the next section.

I guess I've been looking for a book that would teach me more about composition relating to narrative for a while, but without knowing that this was what I was looking for; as such I've brought a bunch of books that I've found entertaining without being quite right. After completing the first chapter of visual story, I realised that I had found exactly what I didn't realise I was looking for and couldn't be happier.

An eye-opening book into "yet" another way to look at how you structure your composition withing the frame, the scene and the film. Not a formula to be applied, but some simple guidelines to bear in mind.
