4.0 out of 5 stars Carefully written, useful, full of information, 7 Feb 2004

This review is from: Practical Recording Techniques (Paperback)
This is a useful, carefully written guide to practical recording techniques (hence the title), full of information and touching on most aspects of the modern recording process.
I spent almost an hour in Blackwells looking through all the books on recording, and this is the one I eventually walked away with. I can't vouch for all the books on the subject, but this was certainly the best buy of what was available.
I give this book four stars rather than five because, in touching on everything, it doesn't really go into great detail on anything. You may prefer 'Making the Ultimate Demo', which is more focussed on a particular task although less complete.
You need also to recognise that this book won't turn you into a recording engineer. The Bartletts work hard to translate what are essentially hands-on techniques about an aural experience into words on a printed page. You still need to spend a lot of time trying out the different things they recommend before you really get the hang of most of them.
Even so, if I lost all of my books on recording and had to buy them again, I would still probably get this as a good guide for the ambitious beginner.

Needed it for college. Seems to cover everything I need nicely. Could do with a bit more about acoustics however.
