2.0 out of 5 stars A-level book
The book reads like a six-form essay, unnecessarily formal and boring.

You won't improve your photography skills reading it, you may get some understanding of the theory of how a sensor works, though. Even so, it could be easier to understand if the authors were not worry to write an "academic" book.

One concept was badly explained in many...

I received the book in no time, which seems to be customary where the mighty Amazon are concerned ;).
The book itself is an excellent reference manual for photographers, semi-pro and pro alike. The only problem I have with it is that SOME of the text has the feel that it was written in a foreign language and loosely translated back to english. I'm not saying the grammar is incorrect, just that there doesn't seem to be a fluidity to the writing and I find I have to re-read sections of text to get the gist of what is actually being said.

Apart from that I'm finding the book excellent. Well researched and documented. Illustrations are clear and user friendly and descriptive photos are of excellent quality and uptodate.

I love the Michael Langford books as you will find that his books are the only ones you will refer to for everything. This one is an added bonus to his Basic Photographer. These books will see you through every question you have about photography is an easy to read, and informative way. Nothing short of amazing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Condition of the book wasn't great, you could tell it was brand new, 11 Sep 2014

Condition of the book wasn't great, you could tell it was brand new, but had definitely not been handled with care; corners were slightly dog-eared and there were minor scuffs to the spin.

This review is from: Langford's Advanced Photography: The guide for aspiring photographers (The Langford Series) (Paperback)
The late Michael Langfords's series on photography is all-embracing and written by a former lecturer in photography at a major art college. Langford was widely respected and there are other books that he authored that are probably now out of print.

I have separately reviewed his 'Basic Photography' book elsewhere on Amazon and this is what was (or is) the third and final volume in the series. An Intermediate volume also existed (and perhaps still does). Individually and collectively, the books are a worthy addition to anyone's photography book library.

Since the first publication many years ago, the book has benefited from several reprints and minor updates and, since the gross expansion of digital photography and the almost complete abandonment of film, it has seen a few periodic and rather major updates. Unfortunately, Langford died some years ago and the updates have since been made by others. However, the essence of Langford's original input remains.

Although there are undoubtedly other titles that are newer and perhaps more relevant to specific modern cameras, this has a very broad coverage and is probably equally authoritative as any other.

I believe this to be the most current edition. An excellent book in isolation or as an addition to others of the series. A must-have.

The book reads like a six-form essay, unnecessarily formal and boring.

You won't improve your photography skills reading it, you may get some understanding of the theory of how a sensor works, though. Even so, it could be easier to understand if the authors were not worry to write an "academic" book.

One concept was badly explained in many paragraphs, but if the authors had added a picture the concept would be readily understandable (authors note this is a book for photographer who tend to be more visual people.)

Nonetheless, the book might prove useful for people interested in Black and White photograph and/or developing film. But it reinforce the idea the book is not for everyone.
