5.0 out of 5 stars Painter X - A new Lease of Life For Photographers, 27 May 2008
This review is from: Painter X for Photographers: Creating Painterly Images Step by Step (Paperback)
If you are a keen photographer this is the only book you need to buy this year! Painter X is Corel's definitive software which enables you to create "real art" effects that you can bring to your photography. This book goes through every artistic effect you could wish for and there are step by step instructions and illustrations on how you can achieve really impressive results. As an amateur photographer, belonging to a photo club, it's interesting to see now how many of us are now using digital instead of film - the computer has enabled a massive upsurge of interest in creativity and Painter X is THE software to bring artistic reality to any photograph. Martin Addison is a photographer who utilises Painter X in his work and he shows it to full advantage on every page. It's a book you can read from cover to cover and its one of those books you can pick up and just open at any page and something new will grab your interest. Photography is transformed - you can really surprise yourself with what you can do and its all there on these pages. Cant recommend a book more highly! ( I won't even lend mine out - buy your own!!)

I'm a keen photographer and I've owned and used CorelDraw and Paint Shop Pro for many years, so I thought I'd try Corel Painter. However I found it quite daunting and complex and I couldn't use it in a structured, organised way.
I bought this book and I found it excellent. It assumes no prior knowledge and starts at the very beginning with a full description and explanation of the tools and techniques available, and there are many! It then steps through explaining the techniques in detail and working through actual examples.
It comes with a brilliant DVD which has tutorials on getting started, cloning, custom palettes as well as tutorials on creating watercolour landscapes and a child's portrait in pastel. It also has the images used in the book so you can work along with the book. I found this incredibly useful.
Painter is a complex program which is probably more in tune with actual painter's technique but this book helps photographers use it. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive guide to a complicated program, 15 Nov 2008
This review is from: Painter X for Photographers: Creating Painterly Images Step by Step (Paperback)
Even for someone well-experienced in computers and with a good ability to paint, Painter X is so versatile as to be too complicated. This book does a wonderful job of de-mystifying the many things that can be created - all done in a comprehensive and logical manner. Excellent!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Firm Foundation, 9 Feb 2009
This review is from: Painter X for Photographers: Creating Painterly Images Step by Step (Paperback)
If you are a photographer and new to Painter X then I strongly recommend you start the learning curve with this book. With the aid of the supplied disc you are working very quickly with the program and seeing its creative potential. The book opens many doors for your imagination and like PhotoShop - one door opens to reveal several more which in turn open even more. You will quickly realise that experimentation is compulsory before you start producing these winning images.

Does exactly what it says on the tin, i.e. it shows you how to process and manipulate photographs using Painter tools and effects. In that respect it is quite a good book, both as instruction and as reference, with plenty of practical examples on the varying effects produced by different brushes and tools. Only drawback from my point of view is that it concentrates too much on photographs, and on faking photos so that they look like paintings (which I can't really complain about since the title tells you that); while I expected it to branch a bit more into the creative and artistic use of Painter. For that, you really need to turn to another book, the highly-recommended "Painter X Wow!" by Cher Threinen-Pendarvis. However, I have both these books from Amazon, and find both useful for reference, each one good in its own way. One real criticism however - Martin Addison's accompanying DVD is disappointing quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Painter X.for photographers by Martin Addison, 23 Jun 2008

This is the best book for photographers wishing to learn PainterX, no two ways/.I am an painter and photographer. As a photogapher I find painter along with photoshop all I would ever need to create modern imagages. As a painter I find the program at best- daft,at worst- pointless.Who needs hundreds of brushes to paint a picture?,and then turn it into a piece paper[print].I went the whole hog and bought a copy of painter magazine, that was quite nauseating to say the least-[dilettante delirium].but As I have already stated the painter X program is great for photographers, and this book is a must..
