5.0 out of 5 stars Love Letter - the third in the Babe's BIble trilogy by Karen Jones:, 1 Dec. 2014
There was a health warning on the back of this book: 'Not for the faint hearted...once you begin you won't want to stop, but be prepared for an emotional journey.'

Love Letter is the third - and, I guess, sadly the last - in the Babe's Bible trilogy. Karen Jones has created a compelling character in Grace, a vicar, who deals with many of life's challenges and problems. Grace's encounters with her husband and son, her friends, her colleagues and the women she encounters at the women's refuge she has helped set up, are interwoven with the book of Ephesians. Meanwhile, Grace is writing a story of her own: begun in the first book (Gorgeous Grace), it is the story of Mary and Lila, first century women who are disciples of Jesus.

There are many parallels and reflections between what happens in Grace's world, and what happens in the world she has recreated in her book. Yet the stories are not too similar. In Grace's world, sinful characters find redemption and grace; in the first century, there is much evil as the Jews suffer under Roman rule until, in 70 AD, the temple in Jerusalem is torn down. Yet throughout both stories there is a powerful sense of God at work in people's lives.

So yes, the health warning WAS true. I read the book very quickly indeed. It was truly a superbly crafted page turner. Having finished the last in the trilogy, it is probably time to start at the beginning again: because these are books well worth a second read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping and gritty, 31 July 2014
By
M. WENHAM "Donkeybody" (Oxfordshire) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Love Letter: A Babe's Bible Novel (Babes Bible Trilogy 3) (Paperback)
Following on from the author's previous two books, "Love Letter" combines a highly contemporary plot with a Bible-based story. In fact that narrative is written by Grace Hutchinson, the woman minister, of the modern story. Events in her ministry are what drive her time and again to examine the Bible story and what it says to her and her friends today. She works in outer London and encounters the most painful of modern life-situations, both herself and in the area in which she lives. I don't want to spoil the plot at all, but for me once I had reached James and Marie in hospital of this book I was hooked.

I'd demur from the publishers' description above in one detail: it's not only for women! I'm a man.

One thing admire about all three books is how Karen Jones kept tabs on all the characters in the two strands weaving together, and progressed the storylines in parallel. She also succeeds in engaging our emotions with ancient characters as well as with the struggles of her contemporary characters. I have to confess I was moved to tears at one point. If the author's intention was to bring the Bible's relevance to life, she succeeded! For anyone who thinks the Good News of grace is only for the religious, sissies and the soft, this is the perfect antidote. It's seriously hard core and contemporary good news.

5.0 out of 5 stars You won't put it down!, 14 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Love Letter: A Babe's Bible Novel (Babes Bible Trilogy 3) (Paperback)
I'm not particularly a religious person but one who, since an early age, has been fascinated by bible stories. Reading Karen Jones' Babe's Bible Trilogy, the fascination has been re-lived. Her innovative, cleverly written books definitely have that 'can't put it down' factor. The way she interweaves day to day life and its problems with modern day characters with those in biblical times has you hoping that the story never ends. After recently finishing to read 'Love Letter', the last in the trilogy, on the sandy beaches of Tel Aviv, Israel, I couldn't wait to open the Bible again after many years.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is an incredible story of the love and grace of God, 9 Sept. 2014
This review is from: Love Letter: A Babe's Bible Novel (Babes Bible Trilogy 3) (Paperback)
This incredible trilogy brought the Gospel to life for my mum and I. It is an incredible story of the love and grace of God, set in both modern day England and Jerusalem during the time of Jesus. We are both Jewish, but while I know Yeshua (Jesus) my mother does not. By the end of this trilogy she admitted that she had been inspired to to read the Bible for herself! Karen Jones' fiction-writing is down to earth and at the same time divinely-inspired! Her characters become close friends and her God, your best friend! A can't-put-down winner for believers and non-believers alike!

This review is from: Love Letter: A Babe's Bible Novel (Babes Bible Trilogy 3) (Paperback)
A wonderful end to the trilogy. This book does not disappoint. As with Karen's first two books, Love Letter draws you into the story and you feel that you know the characters personally. I couldn't put it down.
