I ordered this book just before Holy Week this year. It was the best buy for a very long time. It is indeed a powerfully moving series of meditations on the Seven Last Words from the Cross. That's to put it mildly. Its only 106 pages, but what a wonderful 106 pages. Every line has a wealth of meaning. To give just one example - "To be in paradise is to be 'with Jesus,' to be pulled into God's life by the love made visible on the cross." I read it through at one sitting and then slowly re-read each meditation over seven days. I encountered Stanley Hauerwas's name only a month or so ago from a quote in a book by Ben Quash. His book "Abiding" was Rowan Williams' Lent Book for this year 2013. Rowan was still Archbishop of Canterbury when he selected Quash's memorable book. Holy Week has taken on an even greater significance since reading and absorbing "The Cross Shattered Christ." The Holy Spirit spoke to me as I read the text and it is transformative.
