5.0 out of 5 stars amusing and informative, much better than many cookbooks by TV star chefs of today, 5 Dec. 2012

This review is from: The Downstairs Cookbook: Recipes From A 1920s Household Cook (Hardcover)
The book is written in an amusing, unpretensious style, and her stories of what in turn the older generation of cooks told her is especially interesting, like cooking a swan. Some of the recipes stand the test of time, und they show where today's hot chefs get their "new" ideas from- they aren't actually that new.
Can recommend.

Bought a copy for boyfriend for Xmas and then had to buy another for myself. Very informative with an insight into the life of a 1920's cook for each chapter then easy to follow recipes to cook the way they did back in the day.
Can recommend the Chocolate Ice Cream. Made it several times now, Very easy and moreish!

I was pleased to receive this, having read Margaret Powell's books. I do confess, however, to having just 'flicked' through the pages when it arrived and not picked it up since! I would add this is not a slur on the book and I will find the time to go through it and, who knows, try one of her recipes.
