A familiar tale in a new guise
on 26 November 2011
This mini board book is a spin-off from the ever-popular lift-the-flap book 'Dear Zoo'. The buggy version features all the same animals that we see in 'Dear Zoo', plus a cut-down version of the story.
As we open the book, there is some text on the inside front cover to introduce the story (basically, the zoo sends our narrator various animals to keep as a pet). Each page in the book then shows one creature. Seven of the animals are wrong in some way ('too grumpy', 'too fierce' etc.) and these words are written on the page. The last one, the puppy, is just right! The inside back cover then tells the end of the story.
There are many nice things about this book. I like the fact that the pages are cut in the shape of the animals that they represent (and are printed on both sides). This makes the pictures very engaging. The board pages are nice and thick, so able to withstand the inevitable rough treatment that babies administer!
I'm not so keen on the fact that the book effectively replicates the story of 'Dear Zoo', (except that the cut-down version of the text is not as good as the original and there are no flaps to lift in the buggy book). Buyers should also note that the strap that attaches the book to the buggy is only fixed to the book with velcro, so the book doesn't stay on the strap for long once your baby discover this!
If you want a travel version of the 'Dear Zoo' story for a younger baby, then this is an excellent buy. If you want to share this story with an older baby or toddler, then it's worth investing in the full version.
