This review is from: A Cat Called Elvis: And Other Poems by (MacMillan Poetry) (Paperback)
A fantastic collection of poems from the mighty pen of Brian Moses. Spot on for children from 7 to 12 or for grown-ups like myself. There are lots of animal poems in this collection - which I particularly liked. As well as the eponymous hero there are dragons hiding in Wales and beneath the streets of New York, dogs (The Book of Smells) and fish (who's for a spot of fish ventriloquism?) and even a poem that tackles that age-old earwig problem. Most of the poems are witty and upbeat, but there are plenty of thoughtful poems too, proving that poems for children don't have to be all about bottoms and pants. There's a very sad poem about the first dog in space. There are poems about people too - there's a scary poem about London Underground and a lovely poem about The Friendship Bench. In short - this is a book packed with first-rate poems about all sorts of things. I loved it.
