5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!, 17 April 2009
This review is from: The Love Curse of the Rumbaughs (Paperback)
It was the cover that made me pick up this book - punchy, unusual, intriguing. They could have not chosen it better, it is a true reflection of the book. I read it in one sitting and would have been very angry had anybody dared to disturb me. I would very much recommend it to anybody who likes their stories a bit different!

4.0 out of 5 stars Love to see Disney film this..., 13 Oct 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Love Curse of the Rumbaughs (Paperback)
A clever, if ghoulish, way of introducing the theme of Nature versus Nurture to older children via the concept of human taxidermy and a vile genetic Love Curse. Little Ivy remains seemingly unruffled after her discovery in the old twin's cellar but it is just the beginning of her inner battles. Laced with classic themes of Predestination versus Free Will and the displacement of the fatherless child. This book would make an absurdly good animated feature: think Tim Burton meets Psycho. Quite simply a must for those who like their Young Adult fiction with a taste of the Grotesque and the Gothic.

5.0 out of 5 stars A darkly funny book, 3 Aug 2009

This review is from: The Love Curse of the Rumbaughs (Paperback)
What an odd, quirky book this is. But I mean that in nothing but a good way. It is rare to come across an idea that is truly different, and this story is certainly that. It's a beautifully written book and the author handles his macabre subject matter in an inventive and artful way.
Brilliant stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book bad service, 23 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The book is one of my favourites, and I bought it because I had leant the original to a friend but needed it for an English essay. The book itself is phenomenal and it shamelessly explores social taboos and the ideology of religion and other philosophical things. No doubt about it that this is the best book I have ever read. But I ordered it on a wednesday, paid for one day delivery and it arrived on saturday which was awkward but I got a 5.99 refund for the shipping. I also have the audio book which is great to read along to! I'd highly recommend but if it's needed for a certain date order early!!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Love Curse of the Rumbaughs is twisted, complex and disturbing., 14 Jan 2013
One day young Ivy discovers Mother Rumbaughs in the cellar of The Twins. First thinking the still figure is a life-sized doll Ivy is fascinated, once she realises it is actually the late Mother Rumbaughs she runs screaming from the cellar and into her arms of her mother. And thus the Rumbaughs curse is unlocked in Ivy.

The Love Curse of the Rumbaughs is twisted, complex and disturbing. Ivy's story is a tale of nature vs. nurture. Her mother is convinced her nurture is enough to undo a curse which has remained strong in the Rumbaughs nature for generations.

While it is clear that Ivy is a Rumbaughs, how she came to be one is one of the many mysteries that gets unravelled over time. The Love Curse of the Rumbaughs is not an exciting book, it's more fascinating.

I liked the writing and the story (even though it's suitably creepy) but I believe The Love Curse of the Rumbaughs is very much a love/hate book. I fall into the love category.
