4.0 out of 5 stars good book for good managers, 26 April 2011
This review is from: Bad Apples: Identify, Prevent & Manage Negative Behavior at Work (Hardcover)
It's a good reading. Maybe skipping all the academic research papers if you just want practical advice on managing people and bringing the best out of employees.
Will be even better if there's more case studies.
Particularly like the central message - bad apple behaviors are never caused by one single incident/person only, mostly a result from problematic environment.

I already have the original version of this book published under a different title, but still written by the prolific Adrian Furnham. There are not that many texts covering this interesting and important topic and this book does it much better than most. It draws on a comprehensive range of academic literature and this new edition has been updated to reflect advances in the field. I'm not sure how useful it will be to managers and organisations, but it is an excellent book for students of the topic.

I bought this as a Kindle version, owning the hardback of the first edition, and this is a wider account of 'bad behaviour' at work than its forerunner. My only quibble with the authors is about whistle-blowers being classed in the same category as other offenders, since they have saved lives in the US automobile industry, amongst other places. Aside from the comment, Bad Apples is a remarkably apposite book, which could be read by both managers and the managed. It is helpfully constructed, with a good index, and accessible reference list, without the text being over cluttered with academic references (the notes will lead you to in-depth sources if you want them, or need them). In these days of economic challenge everyone would benefit from thinking carefully both about keeping the staff they do have, happy and effective, and an eye on those who could being doing active damage to the organisation and their co-workers. Some really good examples and cases towards the back make this book both lively and effective (and yes, I too have worked with one or two psychopaths in my time). Highly recommend this text if you are looking to comprehend, and manage 'Bad Apples'.
