5.0 out of 5 stars Irreverent commentary by a leading linguist, 24 April 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Great Eskimo Vocabulary Hoax and Other Irreverent Essays on the Study of Language (Paperback)
This is a collection of humorous essays which initially appeared in a highly technical linguistics journal, but it is far more accessible than this provenance suggests. While a few of the topics are rather recondite, Pullum's considerable gifts as a knockabout polemicist will amuse and inform anyone with an interest in language and the curious ways of academe. Anyone with even a smattering of theoretical linguistics, on the other hand, will find them exhilarating and hilarious.
