4.0 out of 5 stars Reviewing the Vineyard, 24 April 2010
This review is from: In the Vineyard of the Text: A Commentary to Hugh's Didascalicon (Paperback)
This is an excellent book for anyone who wants to find their way into the text of Hugh of St Victor's Didascalicon, not an easy task since he wrote it over a thousand years ago and assumptions have changed somewhat. Illich writes as accessibly as ever, opens up the text most interestingly and tells you all the things he would have said if you were sitting in a tutorial with him. The title comes from the image of Hugh himself browsing through well-loved books like a man strolling through his vineyard and plucking the occasional grape to see how the ripening was coming along. Admittedly this is a specialist field but for those struggling with it, Illich's book is well worth the outlay.

This review is from: In the Vineyard of the Text: A Commentary to Hugh's Didascalicon (Paperback)
I read this book in one sitting, and found myself hardly able to put it down. It is beautifully written and full of fresh and insightful things to say about the act of reading in the Middle Ages. A very fine book.
