5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the lot.
Due to the success of the Spanish national team and the exploits of arguably the world's two biggest clubs, there have been many books about Spanish football. Sid Lowe's book tops the lot and stands head and shoulders above the rest. But this is far more than just a book about football.....

Football takes a back seat for the first 80 pages, Spain's politics...

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent
Can't fault the depth of research that has gone into the book, but if you're reading it for the 'football' side of the rivalry you might find the historical and political context drags on a bit when it's setting the scene. I understand it's an essential part of the story, but I enjoyed this book more once it moved on from that and started telling the story of the rivalry...

4.0 out of 5 stars very comprehensive and well written, 7 Aug 2014

This is a well written account of the rivalry between Barca and Real Madrid. It fleshes out the whole story, giving lie to some beliefs about the forces at play behind their successes in Spain and Europe as well as giving a complete account of how the rivalry developed into more than just a sporting one. I found it a bit long but It's hard to say that any of it could have been left out either. My final thoughts would have to be that if you wanted a conclusive take on the history of this rivalry, I can't see how you would get a better account than this. It is written very well by a man who clearly knows the rivalry and Spanish football inside out. If you want to be educated, this is the book for you.

Can't fault the depth of research that has gone into the book, but if you're reading it for the 'football' side of the rivalry you might find the historical and political context drags on a bit when it's setting the scene. I understand it's an essential part of the story, but I enjoyed this book more once it moved on from that and started telling the story of the rivalry on the pitch. Overall it's a good read though, and an education on El Clasico. I would still recommend it, particularly to people who have an interest in the history of the non-footballing aspects of the Madrid/Barcelona divide in Spain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterfull, 11 Oct 2013
This review is from: Fear and Loathing in La Liga: Barcelona vs Real Madrid (Hardcover)
This rivalry needs a political and cultural historian, football expert, journalist savvy with media, deep understanding of Spain but with no entrenched bias. Step forward the brilliant Dr Sid.

A book heavy enough to throw at anyone who says its just 22 men and a pigs bladder in all respects but also pacy, always interesting and very well written.

Sid Lowe's an impassioned football writer with a rare integrity and zest for research. The interviews with current and ex-players are as compelling and as credible as the account of the political forces acting on them, from before the Civil War to the present. Invaluable ammunition for arguments down the pub.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect book, 9 Mar 2014

Like many, I enjoy watching Spanish football on tv but never had a very good knowledge of it. I'd also studied the Spanish civil war at uni but had never thought of the football during this period. Sid Lowe combines everything so that you have a clear and interesting narrative throughout Spain in the 20th century. Absolutely loved it and didn't feel it had a single flaw. Thanks Sid!

Although I found the beginning of the book a little heavy going, the post war to present day is fantastic. So well researched, with some fascinating insight into the players involved in these two great clubs.
