4.0 out of 5 stars Physiological theory interestingly explained and illustated, 23 Nov. 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Survival of the Fittest:: understanding health and Peak Physical Performance (Hardcover)
Clearly Mike Stroud has written this book as a laymans guide to an area of survival research he has been heavily involved with (heavily to the point of nearly dying). The book is mainly a set of chapters about different endurance situations Mike and others have been in but each is utilised to explain a number of points that he has uncovered as a result of his and others research. If you want to do events such as the marathon des sables or the ecochallenge, as I do, then this is certainly a good read. If you just wanted to read about adventures then you may find the 'theory' somewhat distracting. Overall though I enjoyed the book and it is a good motivator when I think of taking the lift at work rather than climb the stairs!

If you are looking to improve your fitness (especially if you already have a high level of fitness) or are attempting to develop a training program that you would like to base on 'theory' as well as practical knowledge gained through your own hard work, then this is the perfect book. It is very refreshing to hear advice or opinion from someone you can respect as having taken part in an extreme endurance challenge as opposed to somebody laying down theoretical advice without being aware of the realities of REAL hard work. The way in which Dr Stroud puts across the theory and relates it to the practical is very easy to both understand and apply. If you want functional technical knowledge without getting hung up on specifics look no further.
