I was really looking forward to reading this book, as after paying that price i thought i was going to get value for money. This is certainly not the case. This book is definitely not for beginnners, as the first couple of pages are okay, but then it gets very complicated as it goes along. Before long this book has you forever importing images that one would need to have a degree in technical drawing to be able to keep up with it. It does show you certain helpful points but i was fuming at the awkward designs that a learner was expected to complete. I must say that the more i have read this book i have became more annoyed at the tasks i am experiencing, as i am fast losing interest. A brilliant package, but the author must have been thinking that we are all technical designers instead of beginners. It is a shame that such a great program has been let down by a book that gets more complicated as it goes along. Recently i have just read Sams teach yourself Illustrator 9 in 24 hours and Adobe Photoshop 6 for dummies. These books are nothing short of excellent laying out everything in detail, as after only taking a week on each of the books i am very proud to say that i have now became an advanced user with both Programs, unlike this book, as it is a complete let down, as i am having to force myself into it. If you want to design cars and are into Technical designing then this is the book for you, but if you are a learner and are wanting to start from scratch, may i suggest avoiding this book and investing in something that you will not become very frustrated with. Definitely a big disappointment and a complete waste of good money.. One thing that i am starting to notice is that the more i get through the book, then the less detail and explaination it gives you. If there is a Dummies book or a Sams book then i suggest sticking to them, as i have always found that they give beginners the proper instructions that we require. One star i think is being very generous.

I would certainly suggest a little patience when using this guide to Freehand. Each chapter teaches you new skills and techniques which you need to complete later chapters (don't try and jump any!). Take the time to fully digest each lesson and you'll find it extremely rewarding. Best of all if you get stuck the CD included contains video clips of the slightly more difficult bits! This book provides an excellent foundation in Freehand.

... I am totally new to Freehand, but I found Freehand 9 Authorized informative, concise and easy to follow and it gave me a good insight as to what Freehand can and cannot do... I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who already has an understanding of Freehand - but for a novice it is certainly worth looking at. I certainly do not regret purchasing this book
