5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and accessible.
I have not read this book from cover to cover, but have read through large sections, and dipped into it for specific reference, and found it excellent for both. Whether you sit in front of a management station and want to know what goes on underneath, want to program SNMP, or just want to know how network management works, it's there. I've both managed networks, and...

2.0 out of 5 stars Heavy on prose and narrative. Theoretical non-practical.
Having picked this book up with little or no snmp knowledge I was instantly bewildered by the immediate bombardment of heavy theory and prose. This tedius and impractical narrative was in my view accompanied by too much information too early and a rather suicidal lack of real application. There was much pontificating about possibilities but little real action.

This review is from: SNMP, SNMPv2, SNMPv3 and RMON 1 and 2 (Hardcover)
Having picked this book up with little or no snmp knowledge I was instantly bewildered by the immediate bombardment of heavy theory and prose. This tedius and impractical narrative was in my view accompanied by too much information too early and a rather suicidal lack of real application. There was much pontificating about possibilities but little real action.
In fairness this book does contain a wealth of knowledge and lots of facts (and I mean 'LOTS' of facts). Sadly this vital data is locked in a unholy mix of novelist babble, information overload and the ability to waffle endlessly without actually saying anything.
One for scholars perhaps but not if you want to learn anything useful in a resonable timeframe!

2.0 out of 5 stars An overpriced rehash of the RFCs which adds little, 1 Mar 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: SNMP, SNMPv2, SNMPv3 and RMON 1 and 2 (Hardcover)
Save your money. This book spends pages and pages covering trivial networking concepts and then merely rehashes the published RFCs when it comes to describing the SNMP protocols and MIBs themselves. All in all I would say it is a very superficial treatment, and you're not going to learn much from it.

I've both managed networks, and programmed SNMP, and found this an excellent book to extend my understanding of network management.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage on the topic, 16 Jan 2001
This review is from: SNMP, SNMPv2, SNMPv3 and RMON 1 and 2 (Hardcover)
The book cover things in good detail. The thing I found really useful is detailed explanation of the objects in MIB II.
well worth the money I spent for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Authoritative, 6 Aug 1999

This review is from: SNMP, SNMPv2, SNMPv3 and RMON 1 and 2 (Hardcover)
I had been searching the web and other printed text on SNMP network management and found that most do not go into enough detail or the explanations are very vague. If I had picked up William Stalling's book 6 months ago, I would have saved myself a lot of time. If you decide to get a book on SNMP network management, make it this one. It is very comprehensive. Discusses and provides in-depth information on all topics relating to SNMP network management written in a clear and easy to read style. This book is essential for both students and working professionals, thanks to William Stallings.
