This is simply a fantastic company law book for anyone studying company law whether undergraduate, postgraduate, LPC, or BPTC. Whilst it is a legal text, it is just as informative and approachable for anyone simply interested in the legal aspects of companies (such as directors, shareholders or simply enthusiasts). The book covers all the material in great detail (at 824 pages!) and includes discussion of the EU and international aspects of company law which is helpfully interwoven into the relevant chapters. It cites and discusses academic commentary only where relevant (which is useful for academic study of company law), and it refers to and debates any policy issues which arise.

In terms of the editorial styling of the book, I have to admit, I struggle reading 'traditional' (aka boring) books which are just hundreds of pages of black and white 'Times New Roman' text and which have no/minimal paragraph spacing with no imagery, tables etc. For this reason, I struggled reading Gower and Davies' Principles of Modern Company Law (my University's recommended text) and quickly moved on to reading this book. I would strongly advise anyone else to do the same because a more enjoyable, approachable book will inevitably have an impact on your personal enjoyment of your course. Conversely, whilst Brenda Hannigan's book is long, reaching 824 pages as compared with Gower and Davies 1180 pages (which, when comparing to the length of previous editions, seems to never cut material but just adds more and more each year), it loses none of the detail. It is simply more concise. In addition, Hannigan's editorial style has neatly broken up the text by ample paragraph spacing and lots of subheadings which makes the book considerably more approachable than Gower and Davies (and makes it easier to stop if you need to have a break, rather than working your way endlessly to the end of the chapter!!).

Whilst I've mentioned it, for those interested in company law, Gower and Davies is a very strongly opinionated text with the discussion of some very controversial points of company law merely relegated to a footnote (such as its discussion of Citco v Pusser's) whilst going on and on in minute details about issues not in dispute. Similarly, whilst I absolutely loved the 'Texts, Cases and Materials' series in other legal subjects, I have to admit that Sealy & Worthington's Cases and Materials in Company Law does not follow that style. Seal & Worthington's book simply has huge extracts of cases and materials to read without much discussion. As law students are told to read the cases and academic commentary anyway, that book is not helpful to buy.

This book not only covers the essentials of company law, it has hugely helpful practical examples of company law in practice - Even if it is simply reference to the directors - A, B, C and D! The practical aspect of the book takes the theory and puts it in practice before you which is incredibly helpful when you're preparing for an exam!

I strongly recommend.
