A fabulous book!
on 17 August 2012
This is the best Italian dictionary I have ever bought. It is huge, packed with information, and beautifully laid-out. Each word has a full definition, just as you would find in a good English dictionary, with etymology, morphology, homographs, irregular English inflection, idoims, pronunciation notes, links to related words, and many examples of usage. Each word is written in blue, and important notes about usage are highlighted in blue. Entries are also cross-referenced to verb tables and lexical notes.
After the Italian and English sections, there are extensive collections of lexical notes, featuring weights and measures, time, date, place and other terminology, in both languages. There are also tables of irregular verbs. However, the best bit is at the back - a fabulous guide to effective communication in English and Italian. This last section delves into all kinds of letter-writing, business communication (even how to address envelopes), writing advertisements, using the telephone, using text-message shorthand, and so on, all followed by an index of cultural notes.
If you are an Italian learning English, or vice versa, I doubt you'll find a more comprehensive dictionary than this one.
