5.0 out of 5 stars Share a journey into the 'Wild West', 15 Sept. 2012
This review is from: The Oregon Trail (Oxford World's Classics) (Paperback)
I absolutely loved this book as a vivid account of how it felt to be travelling beyond the settlements and into the 'wild west'. I really felt I had shared the journey with the writer.
Until now, I had thought western films were a bit of American propaganda or a cliche, but this book makes clear what dangers really lurked for the early settlers. I loved the descriptions of the scenery, forts and people met. Above all, I loved the account of his time with the Indians. I must warn readers that this is a book of it's time and as such some descriptions of the indians are unacceptable in today's society. It is, however, a real insight into the day to day living and culture of the dawanhoe people. It makes you feel as if you are there because of the detailed account of real people. The only bit I did not really enjoy was when he went on at length about hunting buffalo but this again is an insight into the attitudes of the time.
