It's not easy to give a coherent picture of political developments in this period, especially the complicated evolution of the party system under William and Anne. Hoppit goes a very good job and is also strong on the modernisation of society under the impact of urbanisation and the emergence of the leisured classes. Two small grouses: a) there should have been a fuller account of the workings of the new Bank of England and of the South Sea Bubble, which gets only the lightest of treatments, and b) there is the most extraordinary punctuation mistake repeated throughout the book - possessive plurals are rendered by "s's", as in "Dissenters's" rather than "Dissenters'" and so on. How on earth did the proof-readers miss this?
