5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introductory treatment, worth careful reading, 8 April 2011
This review is from: Fundamentals of Weather and Climate (Paperback)
I teach atmospheric science to undergraduates and Masters students studying a range of Environmental Science/Geography/Earth Science/Ecology-type degrees, and use McIlveen as a recommended text. The book is set at just the right level for students like this - i.e., students who are not studying meteorology to degree level, but who need a substantial appreciation of the processes that produce weather and climate. McIlveen writes very well; I really enjoy his carefully crafted sentences and I find his treatment of the mathematics methodical, and so, easy to follow. Many of my students buy the book and use it for reference throughout their undergraduate and Masters courses. Some others, it must be said, find the book a little daunting. For them, a more picture-based approach, with a more informal written style and without much of the mathematical underpinning, might be more appropriate, but such books will not carry the students into second and third year of UK undergrad courses.
This second edition of McIlveen's book is up-to-date with the science and attractively presented. Like most modern textbooks, the sidebar is used for figure captions and to expand boxed inserts. Figures and Photographs are well reproduced in black and white; whilst this reduces the "wow" factor, the figures/photos are well chosen and do still enhance the readability of the book.
I am delighted that this textbook is once more available and look forward to it enjoying a long life as a standard undergraduate text.
