5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference!!!
This new edition of New Oxford Textbook of Psychiatry is very authoritative and written by very respectable authors who are the experts in their areas. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as 3rd edition of the old Oxford textbook
It is longer than the 3rd edition of the old Oxford textbook and more geared to an international readership than a specifically British readership. I could not find anything on water intoxication in schizophrenia. I was not satisfied with the section on the side effects of Clozapine.

5.0 out of 5 stars New Oxford Textbook of Psychiatry, 3 July 2010

Thanks to Amazon team for asking me for a review. So far I am reading this book and has read one eighth of that. The book is good and rather very good and comprehensive, however there is need for improvement. The language and style is very difficult. The sentences are very long. One who already has very very clear concepts of genetics and neuroanatomy etc. can even barely understand those topics. Other people cannot. It is not written at a very basic level. A suggestion would be to use similar type of language that is used in American books such as Kaplan / Sadock & Sadock's textbook and synopsis of psychiatry. Make use of more illustrations and try to illustrate and tabulate things as much as possible. Also, there is very little information on some learning theorists such as Margaret Mahler and Erick Erickson etc. I have not yet found Margaret Mahler in this book and about Erick Erickson, there is only one table and that too is quite incomplete and insufficient. Similarly the critical appraisal bit is very insufficient. The Royal College of Psychiatrists expects a lot from us for its exams and although this book does provide a lot of those, yet there is a lot to add and improve.
