This review is from: Handbook of the Birds of Europe, the Middle East and North Africa: The Birds of the Western Palearctic, Vol. 2: Hawks to Bustards Vol 2 (Hardcover)
Although published in 1980, this work which is Volume 2 of a set of 9, compiled by a team of leading ornithologists with contributions from international experts from many countries, will remain the standard reference work for many years to come.
It covers all aspects of identification including voice (with sound spectrograms illustrated), behaviour, breeding, populations, migration, and distribution maps. The superb illustrations include all plumages at rest and in flight.
Recent advances in DNA research have come too late to be included, but taxonomical changes are in a state of continual flux anyway, and no book can hope to be completely up to date for long.
