5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to the subject., 3 Aug 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Introductory Statistical Mechanics (Paperback)
This text provides an excelent introduction to the principles underlying statistical mechanics. Although some prior mathematical knowledge is required, this knowledge need not include a great knowledge of statistical techniques. Much of the mathematical skills needed to understand and use statistical mechanics are covered in the first couple of chapters. The text also covers some fundamental thermodynamics, in a more understandable and useful manner than several books dedicated to thermal physics, before going on to present the joint application of statistical mechanics and thermodynamics as a very useful tool in predicting the properties of a number of types of physical system. Each chapter concludes with a selection of problems, with solutions at the end of the book, providing an oppurtunity to both test understanding of the material and develop the skills needed to apply statistical mechanics.
Finally, and most unusually for the type of subject matter covered, it is not difficult to read. The pages are clearly laid out, diagrams are used effectively and all equations are clearly ennumerated. Most importantly, however, the text covers the fundamental physics effectively and concisely, whilst providing sufficient detail on each topic.
I would consider this book essential reading for any undergraduate studying physical sciences, and a source of good reference material for anyone using the techniques of statistical mechanics at higher levels.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bowley and Sanchez, 7 April 2011
This review is from: Introductory Statistical Mechanics (Paperback)
Having been taught Thermal and Statistical Physics in a degree module by Prof. Bowley himself, I felt buying the book was a good idea. Roger is a very experienced researcher and teacher, which is reflected in his book.

The book itself is very densely packed with mathematics, with very few pages absent of at least one equation or derivation. Great for people who learn mathematics well from textbooks. Derivations are clear and logical, and problems (with solutions to alternate questions provided in the back) are set for each chapter. The book, if follwed properly, would surely give the reader a very detailed and mathematical understanding of Thermal Physics.
Not recommended for those who are looking to get a more descriptive or qualitative learning of Thermal Physics.

NOTE: Bowley uses the Dirac notation for quantum mechanics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful, 28 July 2011
This review is from: Introductory Statistical Mechanics (Paperback)
I got a more out of this book than any of my other physics books. It goes through the material at a nice pace, beginning with some thermodynamics and then looking at the more challenging aspect of the underlying statistical physics. This is the fun part though as it can be used to solve some really neat problems. This book is not that densely packed with mathematics as the previous reviewer claimed but the maths is there to give you more than a superficial understanding of the topic.

Having never read any other book on statistical mechanics I can't compare it with other texts, however. Maybe there are other books out there that are even better than this one!
