5.0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly enjoyable collection of women's poems
This collection of poetry contains work by Gillian Clarke, Grace Nichols, Fleur Adcock, Carol Rumens, Selima Hill and Liz Lochead and is a very refreshing book. This review is from: Six Women Poets (Oxford Student Texts) (Paperback)
This collection of poetry contains work by Gillian Clarke, Grace Nichols, Fleur Adcock, Carol Rumens, Selima Hill and Liz Lochead and is a very refreshing book. All poems deal with aspects of a woman's life but each are highly individual. There is a refreshing contrast in the way in which each poet expresss her ideas. Gillian Clarke's work is largely personal and domestic, but by incorporating the past, present and future she has made her poetry universal. The patois employed by Grace Nichols is charming, and the colourful language and imagery paints vivid descriptions of slavery, motherhood and childhood. Fleur Adcock's observations on human development in "Tadpoles" is very interesting, and the wickedly funny "The Ram" by Selima Hill is thoroughly successful. Carol Rumens and Liz Lochead provide some very intellectually stimulating and intersting poems. This book works so well because there is such diversity in its poems.
