4.0 out of 5 stars At last, a comprehensive book for the civil practitioner or academic in the commercial fraud field, 11 Dec 2006

This review is from: Commercial Fraud: Civil Liability, Human Rights, and Money Laundering (Hardcover)
Commercial fraud is a growing field of legal practice (and therefore study), and the civil practitioner has thus far been under-served by books. This redresses the balance by drawing together in a remarkably comprehensive and yet detailed manner (in over 900 pages) the huge number of legal areas that impact upon commercial fraud (the torts of deceit and conspiracy, the equitable rules of knowing receipt and dishonest assistance, the company law of wrongful trading and directors' duties, the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 provisions, human rights provisions) as well as explaining the implications of fraud rules in other relevant areas (such limitation, agency, sale of goods and documentary credits).

Whilst the coverage here is sometimes a whisker less detailed than in the usual first-port-of-call reference sources (I'm thinking about Sweet & Maxwell's Litigation Library range: Clerk and Lindsell, Goff & Jones, McGee on Limitation etc), it is the selection of only the relevant rules, and the presentation of those rules from the fraud perspective, that makes this perfect main reference source for the fraud practitioner or student, at least until imitators appear in the coming years (as they are bound to do). Given the huge number of legal areas that fraud claims involve, a book like this is long overdue, and Ulph and OUP have done well to steal a march on their competitors.
