As an old-fashioned Englishman, I had become familiar with the NRSV, NJB, and the (old) NAB prior to discovery of the NABRE. What a wonderful new edition, with such care in translation, trusted and reliable. The 'reading guide' in the front section will supply all that I need for research / reflection / meditation, added together with the detailed textual cross references and footnotes given beneath each page of the Bible text; and, add the glossary, the concordance, the maps, and the so-helpful thumb indexation, it all makes for a truly COMPLETE Biblical library in one edition. This is the one Bible I will keep on my desk, and by my bedside. As it was chosen for a 'special' birthday, I was treated to the leather bound edition, and how beautifully and finely it is bound and presented.

It's bible comes with a load of reading guides which are chock full of information about the book your reading, along with notes at the bottom of the texts and links to other parts of the scripture. However, cohere are some translation issues. For instance, I was reading Nehemiah in my RSVP version and chapter 4 had 23 verses, whereas in this bible it only had 17!! That's not the only one I've come across either. It makes it pretty unreliable as a text, great for general study though

It is all too typical as a Catholic Bible that the notes are naturalistic to the core. There is no sense of mystery or faith in supernatural intervention by God. No wonder the faithful are deserting the Church in droves. Our religious our such losers. Vatican II is a curse.
