5.0 out of 5 stars Parallel Bible, 20 Nov 2012

This review is from: Essential Evangelical Parallel Bible (Hardcover)
I am very pleased with this as the texts compared are quite different (other parallels don't offer as much contrast and the word differences are slight, subtle maybe, but not that interesting for the general reader) and really provide a fascinating insight into how the meaning may be enhanced (for clearer understanding), or even lose elements of the power or poetry of the text because a translation may be trying too hard to be contemporary or "relevant" in its use of modern language ("Street speak"). Whatever else, this superbly printed and well organised hardback leaves you with respect for the work of the various translating teams who have undertaken these tasks. Ultimately this will help challenge your opinions about the wording of your favourite verses, introduce you to different ways of communicating the sense of the text and in places repel you with how one translation may have distorted that verse for you, not in essential meaning but in language choices which clang rather than charm. Any experience that returns you to the familiar and provokes you to compare has got to be a worthwhile use of your quiet time and therefore I whole heartedly recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Essential Evangelical Parallel Bible, 17 Aug 2012

It is good to have 4 different versions of the Bible in one volume. (e.g. below) The only drawback is the thin pages - which I suppose was necessary to make the book small enough to hold.
The 4 versions are: New King James, English Standard, New Living Translation and The Message.
I quote below the 4 versions of Genesis 1:1-2 in the order above.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

First this: God created the Heavens and Earth - all you see, all you don't see. Earth was a soup of nothingness, a bottomless emptiness, an inky blackness. God's Spirit brooded like a bird above the watery abyss.

Good to be able to compare different versions, some with literal, others with sense priority.
Convenient to have these in one volume.

That is four bibles in one for you right there. Also includes the very expository message version! Go for it, this will help your knowledge of the word of God in great measures.
