5.0 out of 5 stars The best theatre history book I've found
This is a superb book for anyone teaching or studying Drama and Theatre Studies. The writing is accessbile, it includes wonderful source material and, as the title suggests, it is fully illustrated. The section, for example, on the Spanish Golden Age, contains useful information about the politics of the times, illustrations of the theatres and describes production...

1.0 out of 5 stars Inaccesible and boring
I'm a theatre student and as such was expected to read one chapter of this book per week. I barely managed one page - this book was badly written, full of excess detail and boring anecdotes. Like a fossilised old man who continues to talk even after his subjects are asleep so too will this book claim your imagination, freedom, and happiness for its own and slowly...

This is a superb book for anyone teaching or studying Drama and Theatre Studies. The writing is accessbile, it includes wonderful source material and, as the title suggests, it is fully illustrated. The section, for example, on the Spanish Golden Age, contains useful information about the politics of the times, illustrations of the theatres and describes production values in a clear and interesting way.Where possible, it includes contemporary accounts of going to the theatre. For such an attractive and complete book, it is also good value. Highly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Inaccesible and boring, 10 Oct 2013
This review is from: The Oxford Illustrated History of Theatre (Paperback)
I'm a theatre student and as such was expected to read one chapter of this book per week. I barely managed one page - this book was badly written, full of excess detail and boring anecdotes. Like a fossilised old man who continues to talk even after his subjects are asleep so too will this book claim your imagination, freedom, and happiness for its own and slowly suffocate it. It is a boring, soul-crushing, dry book. Leave it alone!
