This review is from: Art in Renaissance Italy 1350-1500 (Oxford History of Art) (Paperback)
This is not a book specifically about painting but about art in general, be it painting, architecture, metal working, tapestry, sculpting etc. & aims to put art in its social context. It covers not only the actual methods of producing art but also who it was made for, how it was viewed and other such areas.

It is an easy read without being too technical or academic.

Because it covers a wide area it doesn't go into too much detail but rather provides a concise overview.

There are plenty of colour illustrations although these are sometimes rather small due to the actual size of the book.

Good value and an interesting read.

Good book for the scholar and the general reader, perhaps a bit prone to go off the track at times but these detours are quite enjoyable. The only complaint, and it is one common to all the Oxford History of Art series, is that the information on the size and location of the works illustrated is contained in end notes rather than being incorporated in the captions necessitating flicking bachwards and forwards while reading a chapter.

This book is a well researched and a thorough introduction to the art of renaissance Italy. It contains lots of full-page colour illustrations and has a nifty timeline at the back of the book. The author talks about how the art was created and its purpose.
I was expecting a headache after the second chapter but I was surprised to find it lucid and not migraine inducing at all.
It would provide anyone with a reliable introduction to this subject.

4.0 out of 5 stars Art in Renaissance Italy, 13 Feb 2011
This review is from: Art in Renaissance Italy 1350-1500 (Oxford History of Art) (Paperback)
The book's content focues round the current art debates, concentrating on the production and viewing a well as reception of the art works. The author by re-examining the art in Reniassance Italy shows the functioning of art in the contemporary society.
This detailed book with its beautifull illustrations can be enriching for those interested in the art discipline more professionally as well as for those who simply admire the art of Reniassance Italy .
A good reference book. Art in Renaissance Italy 1350-1500 (Oxford History of Art)

5.0 out of 5 stars a stimulating read, and E Welch doesn't disappoint, 25 Aug 2012
This review is from: Art in Renaissance Italy 1350-1500 (Oxford History of Art) (Paperback)
a truly interesting book on Renaissance art, considering the subject from a variety of interesting, quirky angles and providing a very multi-facetted, rich perspective of the period. I particularly enjoyed how Evelyn related the materials and themes used in the arts to the respective social, geographical and cultural contexts of the artists and their patrons.

the book is well thought through, and offers a non-traditional view on italian renaissance art for those who have some basic knowledge of the renaissance (but is easy enough to follow and understand for those who don't). i imagine it is an excellent source for students working on related assignments, theses and presentations.

the book was a present from a friend of mine, and I have re-read it four times in the last two years

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantistic Insight into the world of Renaissance art, 31 Aug 2010
This review is from: Art in Renaissance Italy 1350-1500 (Oxford History of Art) (Paperback)
Very well reasearched and informative. I have always been fascinated with Renaissance art and wanted to learn more about it. This book was a very good starting point. It explains subjects like what the main influences were and why religion played such a large part in the art form.

Good use of images here. As a first reader about renaissance art, an excellent choice. Bought and read this before I visited Florence and glad I did.
