4.0 out of 5 stars Portraiture (Oxford History of Art)
Ordered as background reading for a dissertation but a very good overall view of the subject. Would interest students of art history and anyone interested in art equally well.

versus
3.0 out of 5 stars but it is a useful introduction.
Rather pedestrian: if fully explored the artist's relationship with his subject (and the reverse) would require a much bigger and much more stimulating volume than is possible here: but it is a useful introduction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best suited to art historians, in my opinion, it's a thorough examination of the subject., 9 Oct. 2014

Shearer's writing style is fluid, and engaging, and she provides a detailed and comprehensive look at Portraiture in art, predominately in painting. There are good colour and black and white plates to illustrate the points being raised, and each has a short biography. The information is well laid out, and works through the following themes:

What is a portrait?
The Functions of Portraiture
Power and Status
Group Portraiture
The Stages of Life
Gender and Portraiture
Self-portraiture
Portraiture and Modernism
Identities

There's a comprehensive annotated bibliography, and a timeline, as well as a list of websites to visit, a list of illustrations, and a full index.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book - beware not for Older Kindle's, 22 July 2013

Amazon did not make it clear enough that this product is only downloadable to its newer kindle products - thankfully I was able to load it onto my K.Fire, but not the one I use for reading. Hence the poor star rating
