There are few books that have touched me like this before. Zola's masterpiece of working life tells an incredible story of a strike by miners in northern france against pay cuts and there attempt to gain a voice under the oppression of capitalism. Zolas writing style flows so well with lots of metaphors and descriptive writing that makes you feel like you can see and even smell the surroundings. its an incredible story of hardship, suffering, love and hope that grips you all the way through it. no review i feel can do it proper justice as a person just has to read it for themselves to find out but as novels go this is among the greatest ever written. people here have made the point that this is a terrible translation well as this was the first time i read it i wasn't effected by any knowledge of how it should be written but i never came across any difficulties in it and it to me was masterfully written.

the book has a terrible sadness to it but also a terrible beauty.

An historical and romantic novel which grips you straight away and pulls you down with the characters. Rather than sympathise with the fate of the characters you feel you could be one of them. Powerful and inciting.

Powerful account of the privations and suffering of coal miners in France and their attempts to raise wages and condition by striking.
Very realistically told and you feel the darkness in the mine, the hard labour and heartlessness of the bourgeois owners.

Possibly not the entry-level Zola for first-time readers. The Ladies' Paradise would be better, but there is something positive in this one, lacking in much of the rest of Zola. You could finish this one and walk away with some faith in society.

A well earned five stars. Reading this as part of a degree course, otherwise I might have gave up after the first chapter...so glad I didn't...a captivating novel, I couldn't put down.
