4.0 out of 5 stars brief review on what i`ve seen so far..., 20 Jun. 2011

This review is from: Maths in Action - Advanced Higher Mathematics 2 (Paperback)
Is it just me, or does anyone find the chapter on "number theory", from pages 11 to 22 INCOMPREHENSIBLE? First of all that chapter isn`t number theory - its discrete mathematics. Secondly: why are there in each section only at most 2 almost irrelevant "examples"? Whoever wrote this section should give this book to their son or daughter and say: "can YOU understand that? I would make one suggestion to those writing this book: leave out DISCRETE MATHS altogether, or include more that 2 miserably easy examples to progress a student`s understanding of the COMPLEX LOGIC this subject demands. Or don`t you want students to understand it?
No complaints about the rest of it, though - just number theory that stinks!!

4.0 out of 5 stars This is the book for Advanced Higher Mathematics: Unit 2, 17 Sept. 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Maths in Action - Advanced Higher Mathematics 2 (Paperback)
This is the second in the series of textbooks written for the Advanced Higher Mathematics course. This book covers all the topics in the second compulsory unit of the course and is written in a way that helps build on the knowledge gained from the first unit. It provides excellent notes on the background mathematics and how they should be tackled. These notes are backed up with some worked examples.
The book provides the student with numerous practice questions to help perfect their skills and answers are provided for all of these. However, these are written in the form of raw answers and not fully written solutions.
As the first textbook written for unit two of the course it is impossible to compare it against anything previously in print. The book has certainly established a good standard for other textbooks to follow and without doubt has been a great help during my course and revision. Without a tool like this it would be much harder to achieve a good result.
