5.0 out of 5 stars You don't know it all
Byrne does an excellent job of showing a variety of interesting shots and examples of when to use them. He broaches some of the more subtle points of the game and shows not just that they work, but how. Bob Jewett's work on the physics side of this book is phenomenal. If you're sure you can't learn any more about pool or billiards, this book will change your mind...

2.0 out of 5 stars Dont expect too much !
I've been playing pool now (english league) for about 18 months and wanted some instruction for detailed cue ball control etc, and while the author does that to some extent with down to earth easily understood explanations for a limited range of shots, I found the larger portion of the book irrelevant. The first 70 pages I found very interesting, but then the next section...

I've been playing pool now (english league) for about 18 months and wanted some instruction for detailed cue ball control etc, and while the author does that to some extent with down to earth easily understood explanations for a limited range of shots, I found the larger portion of the book irrelevant. The first 70 pages I found very interesting, but then the next section of very little interest as it covered not billiards in general but mainly a particular type favoured by the author (three cushion billiards), special shots made in various competions and even a couple of pages on how to approach a council in the US for permission to open a pool hall!
The next section covers some players, and is TOTALLY irrelevant to any advanced techniqes in either pool or billiards, and to me is there to fill pages, in all a waste of over 150 pages !
"Everything you need to know to reach the highest level".............. Hardly, but then which book accurately describes its innerds on the front cover? Certainly not this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful book but ultimately disappointing, 23 Dec. 2004

This review is from: Byrne's Advanced Technique in Pool and Billiards (Paperback)
There are some great useful tips and in-depth articles in this book that many players will find useful. However, I was disappointed that many articles are not really useful as a pool player - I would've bought a book about trick shots if I wanted to know about trick shots.
About a third of the book is about three-cushion, which I'd never even heard of 'till I read this. I'm in the UK, maybe three-cushion is more popular in the states (where the author is from).
The book could easily be more coherant. I had to read many sections twice or more before they made any sense at all. The section sub-titled "Thiry-three Secrets of the Game" contains thirty-eight points.
The book has certainly helped me improve my playing tremendously, however it doesn't contain everything I need to know to reach the highest level as it claims on the front cover. Still, I would recommend this book because Byrne backs up his tips with in-depth analysis, tests and examples. Everything he states is convincing and there's he explodes a few popular myths that you probably thought were true.
