4.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars - above average young adult read, 26 Mar 2013

This was really good. I wasn't expecting that.
I thought the American Janie would be annoying but actually she grew as a character and you could feel for her. Her situation could have been very Harry Potter with magic on every page but the 'spells' done (not that they are called that) were so placed in the everyday world you could almost believe in them!
Loved the 50s Cold War setting, certainly not pandering to a young reader.
Good chemistry between the three main children (teenagers I should say - they're 14).
This deserves to be widely read, an intelligent and different take on the 'children uncover a plot and help the adults beat evil' genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely, intelligent and lots of fun, 21 July 2013

A fantastic read, set in the early 50s with the Cold War creeping on apace. Janie is a 14 year old American girl who is forced to move to London because of her parent's supposed 'Communist' leanings. There she meets the unusual Benjamin Burrows and his father, the Apothecary, and mystery, potions, transmogrification and political intrigue ensues, not to mention attempting to save the world from Nuclear fallout. It's beautifully written, cleverly thought through, with the 'magic' well explained and as believable as possible throughout. This is also a lovely gift, as the paperback edition is packed with gorgeous full-page illustrations by Ian Schoenherr. Definitely one for magic or sci-fi fans, young or old.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting, 25 Nov 2012

The Apothecary is an enchanting tale set in post-war London. It's a lovely perspective of London during the Cold War from an outsider's point of view, and mixes science and mystery and magic all in one lovely potion of a book. Engaging from the outset.

5.0 out of 5 stars GOOD PURCHASE!, 25 Aug 2012

I had seen this book reviewed in the Sunday Times and, on the recommendation of the review, bought it for my 11 year old grandson who is an avid reader. He started to read it immediately and I had very little communication from him until it was finished! I think that says it all, obviously a good choice.
