5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece
As a graduate of Russian, I've often felt a bit embarrassed by the fact I have never read Tolstoy, and Anna Karenina is definitely one of those books that you intend to read but never quite pluck up the courage to tackle. Well dear readers, I have finally been brave enough to plough though it (and please pardon the pun, those of you who have already endured the endless...

3.0 out of 5 stars Nineteenth century scandal
Upon learning that Anna Karenina had won a place in the BBC's Top One-Hundred Books list, I thought it was about time I gave it a read. Being approximately eight hundred pages in length and having been translated from its original Russian, it was no mean feat, I assure you. I enjoyed the opening immensely; Tolstoy begins the book with news of a household in chaos, with...

3.0 out of 5 stars difficult after moden novels, 27 Dec. 2010
Forty percent of this book is about Anna Karenina, a large part is about farming and peasantry, another large chunk is about local politics and finally, a great deal ponders on the meaning of life and death. Fortunately, for me, I enjoyed all these and found Anna's story less convincing. Yes, I believe she would run off with Vronsky, but I don't believe any woman would kill herself just on speculation that Vronsky was in love with someone else. I believe a woman would kill herself if she had evidence of his affair with another woman, and that part of the novel would have been stronger had Vronsky actually dallied elsewhere, an event that would not have been out of keeping with his character.

I read the novel slowly, stopping to read other, shorter moden novels during Kitty's illness and during Anna and Vronsky's tour abroad, both sections that were dull compared with the rest. Still, Tolstoy is a master at understanding the complexities of human nature and demonstrates it well here, especially in Levin, his alter ego.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tolstoy, 12 April 2013

Am slowly getting through this book. Not because it's a difficult story to follow,in fact this translation makes it a very easy read.If the idea of reading a Tolstoy novel fills you with dread,I recommend you read this one in this translation. You will be hooked.Strong arms are needed as it is a very thick and heavy book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anna Karenina, 28 Jan. 2008

Having just read 'the greatest novel of all time', and loved it, I was mythed to see the average review being four stars, including a one star.
This is the first love story I have read out choice, and I liked the begining, and, form around page 200, I fell in love with it. Tolstoy does and incredible job of making the user feel for the characters, especially Levin, and the translation is perfect.
This book is worth five stars from the first to the last page, and is a truly great read, the rest of the reviewers must be crazy or illeterate to give such awful reviews.
