Heinz Höhne has to be regarded as one of the top dogs when it comes to the SS. In "The Order of the Deaths Head" he has produced a very well researched and interesting book. He presents a detailed account of this gruesome organisation from its conception to its demise. He also provides some very interesting info on the top men and the internal power struggle of not only the SS, but the Third Reich as a whole. A great read and certainly a must have for everyone interested in the subject.

The classic in its field by a specialist in Nazi Germany. I found this work invaluable as a research source for one of my own books. Highly readable and highly recommended

As an ex-pat living and working in Munich, I bought this from the perspective of having an interest in historical events close to where I am. This is not an easy reading book for those with a light or mild interest in WW2 - it is a very heavy read; but clearly very well researched and deserves the Penguin Classic Military History book status. It does labour heavily on the key proponents with the SS, and their rivalries. Neatly dispels any myth that the NSDAP were a single, unified organisation - far from it. I found the early chapters OK, but my interest had waned by halfway through. A solid book for anyone doing detailed study solely on the SS - Herr Hohne has done a fantastic job - I'd expect to find copies of it in big military libraries For those with a more average read - try Laurence Rees' 'The Nazis - A Warning From History' instead.

Terrifying, an exposure of the brutality, yet bravery of these brain washed Nazis.
