This book takes flight from the flurries All Souls, an earlier book by the same author is said to have created in Oxford, where it is set. Wonderfully discursive, as only Marias can be, and blessed with extraordinary bits of luck and detective work, he leads us to places and people you would never guess had existed.

I actually loved this book but realise that it would not appeal to everyone. It is really an examination of how we see ourselves throughout life. How do we relate to the fiction of existence . As usual, Javier Marias has a beautiful seductive style of writing which is well translated into English. What might deter some readers are the potted histories of some lesser known writers but as usual , everything he writes, is there for a purpose and contributes to the whole. Perhaps not for the faint -hearted but still a good read and a book which leaves one reflecting.
