4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but not quite on his usual level, 19 April 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Homer S Daughter (Paperback)
Don't expect I, Claudius. Don't expect Count Belisarius. This novel is actually easier to get into, but less affecting, less mythic although dealing with legend rather than history. Based on the fact that bards calling themselves "Homer's Sons" wrote sequels to the Iliad, and that the Odyssey has been judged to display feminine touches, Graves assumes that a woman - a Sicilian princess in the eighth century BC - wrote the Odyssey drawing as much on her own experience as on myth, history and folklore: and he tells her story, and a gripping adventure it is too. It's just that it's not much more than that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Homer with a twist, 21 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I like the cleverness of this book, with all the Homeric echoes and allusions set in a different context - so near and yet so far. At times there's a slight 'lumpiness' about it that makes it a 'like' rather than a 'love' for me. But very clever stylistically.
