I was really looking forward to this novel and felt it was something I should have read years ago. That was the problem - I should have read it years ago! It seemed dated and the translation was clumsy at times
Two men and a string of love affairs in pre first world war France. If you think sex didn't begin untill the 1960's then this will be an eyes opener for you. Besides the grande affairs there is also a realist approach to love and life on the agenda here. A catalogue of liberal behaviour mixed with jealousy stretches the two friends relationship to breaking point several times. Jules and Jim live for love and each other and it is this which becomes their final downfall. An oddity that seemed much the forerunner of Kourac's "On The Road" in terms of style and content. This book is interesting in its quirkiness and theme but ultimatly not the most readable and enthralling books.
