A greatest hits (plus B sides) from a master craftsman
on 25 April 2013
I was raised on Groucho Marx. A lot of children are given milk. Some would call this child abuse. Some would've had the sense not to type this. It was great fun to thumb through some of the classic scripts Groucho and Co worked on but they were missing one thing for me. His delivery. I know it sounds like I'm whinging but you get used to it. The genius word play and lethal wit are all here but they are not as much fun as watching the films or listening to the radio shows again. The excerpts, quotes from You Bet Your Life and newspaper articles are fairly good, but they're a little dated and dusty for me. A fun book to dip into but, for me, you'd do better sticking to watching the great man on the screen.
